afair the artsd daemon working thru alsa drivers anyway, so your question is not cute enough. find the attractive driver for vmware-emulated soundcard in alsa package or in kernel and use it at your happiness. it's possible 4 ya help to try vmware-tools too.

what do you mean by "the attractive driver for vmware-emulated soundcard in alsa package or in kernel"? I can see that vmware uses /dev/dsp by default, but I don't have such a file and I don't know what to write there instead of /dev/dsp

if you see that the node /dev/dsp is absent in your system, it means that you have no sound neither in debian environment nor in vmware, am I right?
Let me guess your vmware host machine: the primary OS is debian and you try to tune the sound in vmware hosted on it, or you have vmware hosted on offtopic-like OS and try to tune the sound in the debian environment emulated with vmware? "under debian 3.1 alsa in vmware" sounds in two ways, you know...

no, I have sound in debian 3.1, but there is no /dev/dsp node (maybe because of udeb?). I have /dev/snd/ catalog with files in it. debian 3.1 is a host os.
